American Idol, 4/6 & 4/7 2011

Pia leaves us tonight. Did America get it right? Are the eight that are left so much more talented than she? What do you think happened?

I thought for sure someone else would be leaving tonight. I'm afraid that Pia just waited too long to loosen up and break out of the ballad mode. Great voice, but the people voting have no patience for that kind of singing (and neither do I, for that matter).

Some contestants have an unfair advantage by virtue of their voting base. For example, I don't care for Scotty or Lauren. But all the down-home country folk south of the Mason-Dixon line are casting their votes for them. And we've seen country win this thing a time or two in the past.

Iggy Pop? That was a 64 year old dude up there with his shirt off singing. What is the Rock world coming to? Next, they'll be foisting Steven Tyler on us, for crying out loud.

Go ahead. Leave us a comment.

  1. The camps are divided over this one. A lot of people out there might feel that this is a blessing in disguise for Pia. If she follows some of her previously shockingly-early- departure Idol predecessors (Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry) it's possible she might have an unfettered chance at signing with a label and making her own ballad-styled album. There are others who might say that the Hudson's and Daughtry's of the world are a rare exception and that exiting in 9th place pretty much signs your fate to the pasture. I think it remains to be seen. Her issues are that she was critisized for not connecting with the audience and a lackluster stage presence....all things that can possibly be fixed. But she never got the chance to show growth in these areas, had she stayed around for another couple of weeks. So again, time will tell if these will hinder her in her own career. (Do you think anyone had this discussion with Susan Boyle?) Perhaps Pia is not an American "Idol", but rather a very skilled singer who should be in a different niche altogether; Broadway, soundtracks, Carnival Cruise Lines...lol.

So since there have been 5 girls eliminated should Haley and Lauren be shaking in their Pradas? Perhaps. If this vote is based on tween's and Cougars, then yes, they should be very worried. But, I think we all need to steel ourselves for more sad departures because the talent is so strong this year (once Jacob and Stefano are gone). It will be a very tough road to the finish. I can't even predict who will finish out....

A couple of other observations: Many folks are blaming the judges who told Pia to try mix it up and then is eliminated. Their beef might be that they didn't tell Scotty to sing anything other than Country. We all know that some people are never going to be able to get out of their genre and asking Scotty to sing "Highway to Hell" on AC/DC week would, to say the least, be uncomfortable for him (and us.) But are the judges wrong to ask contestants to try different-paced songs? I don't think so. I think they were asking her to mix up the tempo and style, which is perfectly expected. We want to see range and that's what they were looking for from her.

Second observation, Haley seemed pretty happy until she realized that the camera was on her and then she quickly showed some mock sadness as the shock wave rippled through the audience. I caught her doing this twice...interesting.

  2. Almost forgot, Iggy Pop. Was Adam Ant booked? Did Billy Idol have other plans? What on earth made the producers think that Iggy Pop would be interesting, other than the fact that we're all talking about it. Even JLo was embarrassed. Is there anything scarier than a 64 year old has-been trying to "scare" audiences with his idea of an avant-guard performance. There was nothing punk about the song, other than it was atonal and stupid. Thumbs down to Idol for giving us 3 minutes too many of the liposuctioned- pec-implanted- f-bomb dropping-spray-tanned- shark-jumping-scary- old-man-trying to reclaim his punk youth- ugliness. He should be ashamed of himself. At least Keith Richards has the tact to keep his shirt on nowadays. Should we prepare for the Johnny Lydon next week?

  4. I think the judges need to be a little more restrained in their comments. Sure, perhaps in the perfect world where everyone who is shocked actually votes, Pia would not have been eliminated. But them's the rules, so they and the rest of the harrumphing non-voters out there should live with America's decision.

And if I'm Stefano next week, I'm singing to the crowd and the camera. To heck with the judges who were mad that I did not get the boot. While they are critiquing me, I'm smiling and waving to my fans ... "Who me? You talking to me J. Lo? I already know that you think I shouldn't even be here, so shut your pie hole!" My voters apparently know better than the judges and I'll sing for them and only them.
