American Idol, Thursday 1/20/2011

Tonight's American Idol was twice as good as last night's because it was half as long - just one short hour. Did you notice how they did a montage of the lame, untalented contestants? And they gave the good and not-totally-lame contestants the bulk of the time. Hallelujah for small favors to the audience. So far, so good.

Steven Bleeping Tyler was not as obnoxious as last night. Still, it's hard to get over a 62 year old man trying to act like a 22 year old. It's heck to get old. Randy was getting all Simon there for a while. He told one singer "That was terrible". Is he the bad guy this season? Jennifer was better. Not so worried about saying "No" to the bad singers.

I don't like the 15 year olds in the competition. I believe American Idol should only allow 18 and over to compete. But that's just my opinion. 15, 16 and 17 year olds are in just too much of a hurry to become ... something. Like all other teenagers in this information age, they need everything now. And American Idol is willing to give it to them. But they lack that certain, je ne sais quoi? Gravitas? Experience? Maturity? ... Yes, all of the above.

Did we see the next American Idol from Nawlins tonight? Maybe. Let's hope there is someone who'll blow us away with their talent in Los Angeles. I liked the black guy from Baton Rouge who teaches piano and voice. I liked the last girl, also, who had the special needs child. Both sang well and could move on. There are many we did not see tonight and last night who made it through. I expect Hollywood will be very good.

Stay tuned for next week's competition.

Prediction: The Green Bay Packers will play the New York Jets in the Superbowl. Brett Favre will perform the ceremonial coin toss for his old teams. Let's all petition for that!

  1. January brings us two things to talk about around the water cooler: NFL playoffs and American Idol. Playoffs notwithstanding, AI started off a new season giving us lots to talk about.

    My impressions so far:

Judges: I like the new judges but I do miss Simon's acidity. It's all a little too nice now. I think we saw too much of "you've got a beautiful voice" and not enough "if you think putting silver stars on your nipples is going to get you to Hollywood...". I am liking Steven Tyler, lech that he is, but he is funny. He makes me laugh, actually. Jennifer Lopez is actually very likeable. I always pictured her as a Diva (in the worst sense of the word) surrounded by her "people" and small yappy dog attached. But I do like her easygoing personality and I think she will provide some good advice to contestants, something that we have not seen in awhile. Once she gets used to saying No. Randy is, well, Randy, maybe feeling a little more like the king in his castle, "this is MY gig, dawg" as the most senior member of the trio.

Contestants: I liked the voice/piano instructor from Nawlins, too. Very very likeable. We'll see if his understated Southern manners will hold up against the silicone and egocentrism of Hollywood. Same goes with the young'ns..it can get pretty cutthroat, especially when you involve tha Joisey goils. It's like the Duggars vs. Jersey Shore. Might get ugly. My complaint, is that we didn't see enough of the goofy ones! I would have liked a few more auditions of the bad ones, just makes it fun. But, with a new producer it was probably decided to reduce these to a montage.

Liked: family members could watch the audition outside. Liked the red-headed guy who will represent all those kids out there who get their lunch money stolen and teased for being different. Vive la difference! Hope he goes pretty far just to get back at all those bullies!

Didn't Like: The last girl at the very end with the disabled daughter. I'm definitely empathetic but I think it became pandering and maudlin. Jennifer's tears were appropriately on cue, and it just seemed forced, the whole thing.

Looking forward to more auditions next week.
    Tara
